A E Lemmon (1889-1963) Artist & Craftsman The stained glass windows and other art works of a Midlands craftsman.

A E Lemmon (1889-1963) Artist and Craftsman is devoted to the life and work of this Bromsgrove artist-craftsman and his son Peter. Alfred Albert Lemmon was born in Ladywood, Birmingham and trained at the Birmingham School of Art from 1903-1909.

In about 1911, Lemmon became an assistant to A J Davies in the stained glass studio at the Bromsgrove Guild. In 1927, Lemmon established his own studio in Bromsgrove undertaking commissions for stained glass windows and the decorative arts. His stained glass windows and decorative art work, including painted altarpieces, altar crosses and candlesticks, church wardens’ staves and processional crosses, painted panels and banners, are to be found mainly in the West Midlands and Lincolnshire.

This book has gazetteers of stained glass windows and decorative artwork, twenty- eight colour photographs, a bibliography and index. Twenty-eight colour photographs illustrate the range of works produced by this designer craftsman.

The Stained Glass Windows of A J Davies of the Bromsgrove Guild, Worcestershire

The Stained Glass Windows of A J Davies is the first book devoted to the life and works of this Bromsgrove artist-craftsman. Archibald John Davies (1877-1953) was educated in Birmingham and trained at the Birmingham School of Art in the Arts and Crafts style. In 1906 he established a stained glass studio in the premises of the Bromsgrove Guild in Worcestershire and worked there until his death in 1953.

Davies’ designs, studio personnel, commissions and patronage are discussed. A gazetteer gives details of 240 of his windows found in Britain. Fifty coloured photographs illustrate the range of his work. Appendices include details of the Bromsgrove Guild, Davies signatures, the Toc H lamp casket, and other art works by Davies. There is a bibliography and index. This book will appeal to everyone with an interest in stained glass and hopefully bring greater recognition of the talents of Davies as a stained glass window maker.
